Heart is a organ which pumps blood for the whole body. According to dictionary.com heart can be defined as hollow pump like organ of blood circulation, composed mainly of rhythmically contractile smooth muscles, located in the chest situated between the lungs slightly to the left. HEART has four chambers 1. right artery, right ventricle, left artery, left ventricle. Right artery receives the blood from all parts of the body through superior and inferior venacava. The right ventricle passes this blood to lungs through pulmonary artery for oxygenation. The left artery receives the oxygenated blood via the pulmonary veins and passes it through mitral valve.the left ventricle pumps the oxygenated blood via the aarota throughout the body. Heart is four chambered organ in mammals and three chambered organ in reptiles and amphibians. Heart is tubular structure in earthworm and contractile structure in all invertebrates. Heart is the seat of all emotions.Heart is the most important organ that a brain dead person can live but heart dead person is declared dead. There are several heart diseases like heart blockage, heart attack, cardiomyopathy.
When there is stress or pain in the chest it is taken seriously as it can be because of blood pressure or any dysfunction with the heart. good emotions like happiness, love, sympathy , affection, spirit, courage, enthusiasm, joy strengthens the heart . Negative emotions like anger, hatred, jealousy, lust, greed etc compress the heart.
DISEASES OF THE HEART: According to Wikipedia, 30% of deaths globally occur due to heart disease. Similarly in high income countries 28-40% of deaths occur.
ISCHEMIC HEART DISEASE:Coronary heart disease known as Ischemic heart disease is caused by arteriosclerosis which means deposit of fatty materials along the walls of arteries. If the deposit is more then arteries get narrowed down causing pain or breathlessness. This plaque ruptures and exposes the fatty material to the blood. sometimes it forms thrombus and blocks the arteries restricting blood flow to the arteries causing myocardial infraction or unstable angina. It may cause cardiac arrest if not treated. Generally angioplasty or bypass is suggested in severe cases and in mild cases changes in diet & lifestyle along with tablets prescribed by doctor .
Cardiomyopathy: This is a situation when there is abnormal thickening of the heart muscle or heart enlargement and weakening of heart muscles or stiffening of heart muscles unable to fully relax during contractions or abnormal heart rhythm. Generally this leads to heart failure in all patients. In athlete this situation can be a reason for cardiac arrest.
Valvular heart disease: This situation arises when heart valves weaken or is diseased . This heart valves generally allow blood to flow in one direction but either because of leakage or narrowing of valves blood flows back. This is called regurgitation. valve replacement surgery is the only remedy. This is even called open heart surgery.
Heart arrhythmia: This situation can be treated by anti arrhythmic drugs. The flow of electrolytes across the cell membrane is manipulated or autonomic nervous system’s effect on heart is modified. In some arrhythmia atrial fibrillation increase the risk of stroke. This can be reduced by anticoagulants.Catheter ablation is another option to treat this condition.Sometimes when situation is serious it calls for open or thorascopic surgery. Cardiac devices such as pacemakers or implantable defibrillators are used to treat serious life threatening rapid heart rhythms.
Heart failure: All the above situations can lead to this condition.
In such conditions first aid like CPR is given to relax the tension and move the patient to hospital as early as possible.
